ESL teaching in Japan uses the ‘Communicative method’ or ‘Compartment’ teaching, just chapter by boring chapter, drill after drill- where students just memorize a limited set of phrases that can only be used in a limited situation- this is bad for students, because unless students are in that situation, then communicating what they really want to say is very difficult.
