Background
ESL teaching in Japan uses ‘Compartment’ teaching, just chapter by boring chapter, drill after drill- students just memorize a set of phrases that can only be used in a limited situation- this is bad for students, because unless students are in that situation, then communicating what they really want to say is very difficult. And because students are taught in this ‘compartment’ style, they often can’t use English in a natural way. And this can also have a negative effect on their test results, especially during interview and speaking parts.
